New Beginnings

The end of another year is upon us and a new one is just around the corner. I've been working on a small scrapbook album for a family member and it has enabled me to capture our past year in little snippets and remember...the sad times and the happy times. Sometimes life throws us a curveball and we have no choice but to take it as it comes. I really do believe that our response matters and God can take anything and everything in our lives and make it good.

This is the perfect season to reflect upon what is most important in our lives. Do our daily activities reflect that? Are they taking us where we want to go? I have been asking that for several years now, wondering what God has in store for me in this new season of my life. I homeschooled for 16 years and that all changed a little over 4 years ago. Now my youngest child is in high school! I believe God has been leading me and guiding me in this new season, even when I couldn't see 10 feet in front of me! There have been a lot of little steps (and even some going backwards!) that have led me to my next adventure...I will be starting beauty school in January, to become an esthetician and nail technologist. I am as surprised as anyone...I don't remember ever imagining myself in this field! God has a way of surprising us when we least expect it! AND He has a great sense of humor! Now the reason for this post...to say good-bye. UGH...that sounds so final. I hope to continue reading your blogs and leaving comments every now and then, but I'm no longer going to be writing this one. I so appreciate you for hanging in there with me and encouraging me over this past year or so. I've gained a lot from you. Thank you!!

My prayer for you in this coming year is that you will be blessed beyond measure. I pray you will gain a deeper understanding of how much God loves you! Ephesians 1:17-21 comes to mind--that is my prayer for you.

Have a wonderful, memory-filled holiday season and may your 2011 be full of wonderful surprises!

It's Fall!

Update on collages...they look so much better now that they are completely dried, so don't get discouraged if they look wrinkled when you're finished. Here's is one that has dried completely and another I'm adding to the collection for you to see.

I can't get this picture to turn, but you can compare it to the picture in the previous post and see that the wrinkles dried out.

My dear friend, Cherie, from Cause I Believe In You, along with her husband, brought me these beautiful fall colored flowers last week and they still look lovely! I just had to share...

Are you enjoying your Fall weather? We have had cold mornings and evenings here in Oregon, but the days have been full of sunshine. Yippee for the sun! I am getting into the holiday spirit already and have slowly began my Christmas shopping. Are you ready for the holidays?

More Collage

I was first inspired by a collage my mom made years ago...it's a photograph of me when I was about 4 years old!

I come from a family of very artistic and talented women and have always wished I had more of their gifts in me. In my late 40's, I think I am finally learning to recognize my own giftings and accept me as me. :o)

I have also been inspired by Kelly Rae Roberts and her new book "Taking Flight". Not only does it have beautiful pictures and how to's, it is wonderful reading. Thank you, Kelly!

Summer Reading

We've been having Fall weather for several days and school starts next week. I'm sad that this season is ending, but thankful for all the memories made! Some of the things I've enjoyed this summer: a make-up class through the community college with my oldest daughter; precious time with family & friends; a shopping trip in Portland with my other two daughters; my 30 year (!) high school reunion; a Miranda Lambert concert; a short but sweet camping trip; and even some visits to three beauty colleges!

I did manage to get in some reading and thought I'd share what's currently on my "bookshelf".

I've been nurturing my interest in skin care and make-up and decided to purchase this very informative book by Paula Begoun. If you've ever wasted money on skin care and make-up products then this book is for you! It is well worth the money and could save you hundreds...literally! If you have any interest at all on this topic you can check out her website at http://www.beautypedia.com/.

Www.WhereWomenCreate.com is one of my favorite resources for creative inspiration. The Stampington Company publishes several excellent magazines and Where Women Create is my fave!

My oldest daughter, Sandi, is an avid reader of historical novels and classic literature. She has read Jane Eyre at least 3 or 4 times and finally convinced me to take the plunge. It is beautifully written and I'm so happy I listened to her!

I've saved the best for last! Because I don't usually attend bible studies during the summer months I decided to just read...what a concept! ha ha :o)

The Message Bible is my all-time favorite that reads like a novel.

I hope you've had a wonderful summer, enjoying the people, places, and things you love!

I guess it's almost time to close this chapter and start on the next...

This is my new favorite purse I purchased from Anthropologie for $9.95. If you know anything about Anthropologie, you know I got a steal!

I've never worn much jewelry other than earrings, but as you can see I'm getting quite the collection! Below are some of my favorite pieces...

From the Mountains to the Seas

The weather has finally warmed up here in Western Oregon! We were beginning to wonder if we were ever going to have summer. Now that its' here, it's time to enjoy our beautiful state.

My husband loves to drive around in the mountains. He took me to this beautiful little lake...remote and romantic!

He wasn't trying to be funny, but I got a chuckle when I saw him checking out the view...

A Lovely Find!

I popped over to St. Vinnie's the other day and came across these lovely

watercolor paintings. I fell in love with them and decided they were coming home with me!

I don't often find such treasures, but these are the kind that keep me going back for more! I hope to frame them and hang them in my craft room. They make me feel happy and inspired.

Whatever your day holds, I hope you will find at least one treasure in it...it doesn't have to come from St. Vinnie's!

What I've Been Working On

I finally finished two of the collages I started some time ago.

I was inspired by own desire to be the best "Me" I can be, and thinking of my daughters, how different and special each one is.

Sing YOUR song and SHINE! Be the best YOU you can be! You are an individual with gifts that only YOU can use! God is so amazing and He has created each one of us with unique characteristics. Take time to get to know yourself. My prayer for my daughters, myself, and for you is that we will each be that unique person we were created to be.

Oregon in the Spring

The sun is shining and after a long spell of cold, wet weather, it is so refreshing! I went for my morning walk and decided to take my camera along. I love the different colors and all the green the springtime offers.

Spring Break in Idaho

We spent most of our spring break in the Boise, Idaho area. Here are some photos of our time in McCall, which is a lovely mountain town about 100 miles north of Boise. I fell in love (more than I already was!) with the log-type homes speckled all over the land.

McCall is known for their skiing and other winter sports. They host a winter carnival in January and also have lots of fun things to do during the summer. It is located right next to a lake. Definitely a fun place to hang out if you love the outdoors!

Compassion or Judgement?

Just a few quotes I wanted to share from the wonderful sermon we heard at church a couple of weeks ago...I've been pondering them quite a bit and still find myself becoming judgemental towards those who have acted that way toward me....I guess I'm not any better! ha ha

Truth without grace = judgement

Me and my "Valentine"

Our wonderful children, who as you can see are mostly grown up!

One of my daughters shared with me today that a friend texted her at 1:00 this morning (yes, A.M.!) with these words, "Welcome to Single's Awareness Day!" I thought that was hilarious until I really started thinking about it....then I felt sort of sad! I would feel sad if I was single...my other daughter (who is single) reminded her Facebook friends that Valentine's Day isn't just for lovers. She went on to say how much fun she had with her family (us!) and a dinner that evening with a good friend (another single gal). It made my heart happy that she feels that way!

Our pastor had such a great message on Valentine's Day. His words were a sweet reminder to me of how awesome our God is.
"Love is the environment of the miraculous...
God is love...open your heart and receive His love...
We can only give what we have already received."

I hope everyone of you had a love-filled day! Love comes in many ways if we open our hearts. May we open our hearts to God and let Him love us!

Felted Wool Flowers

I've been wanting to make some simple flowers out of felted wool, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I started with some sweaters (they need to be at least 80% wool) that I purchased

from garage sales.

After I washed (in hot water) and dried the sweaters, I cut them apart.

I used a scrapbooking stencil to trace flower shapes and then cut them out

with some sharp scissors.

I had two different sizes of flowers so I put the smaller one on top of the larger one and then

topped them by sewing a button on each one. Here are the finished items!

Obviously my flowers aren't perfect, but that's the quaintness of handmade, right?!

Creative Fun

A goal I have for this year is to spend more time being creative. If you suffer from fear and doubt at times like I do, then I hope this gives you just a little courage to use that creativity that is just wanting to erupt and escape!

I posted this collage previously, but changed the frame color and added the pretty ribbon. It's my first attempt at a collage in a very long time!

Just a few simple tags....and bookmarks.

I went through a phase where I bought second had dishes and repurposed them into other useful items. I have used them as food trays and jewelry holders.

I've been inspired and encouraged by the many artists I'ves seen and read about in Cloth Paper Scissors and all the wonderful Stampington magazines. I hope you'll take the time to check out these terrific resources!

Yummy Fiber-Filled Carrot-Zucchini Bars

I'm always looking for great tasting, healthy snacks for our family. I have several recipes that I like and have combined ingredients over time to create my own recipe. These bars are cake-like and really yummy. They rarely last to the next day!

Yummy Fiber-Filled Carrot-Zucchini Bars

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

1 extra large egg (or 2 egg whites)

1/2 cup brown sugar, tightly packed

1/2 cup white sugar

1 TB vanilla

1 cup low-fat buttermilk (note: if you don't have buttermilk you can use 1 cup

non-fat milk and add to it 1 TB lemon juice and let it

sit for 5 minutes.)

2 cups zucchini, grated

1 cup carrot, grated

1 cup oat flour (I grind regular oats in my blender to make the flour)

1 cup whole wheat pastry flour

2 TB flax meal (I use this instead of oil)

1 cup dried cranberries

2 tsp ground cinnamon

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1/8 tsp salt

3 TB peanut butter (creamy or chunky)

1/2 cup walnuts (broken into small pieces)

Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.

Beat egg well and add both sugars. Add vanilla, zucchini, carrots, cranberries, buttermilk, & peanut butter. Mix well.

In another bowl mix flours, flax meal, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, & nuts. Mix together and then add to sugar mixture, mixing well. Pour batter into your baking dish and bake 35-40 minutes.

There are so many variations to this recipe! You can add raisins instead of the dried cranberries, or go with half of each. Sometimes I add applesauce or pineapple. If you do this you may need to add a little more flour to thicken the batter. Chopped apples, chocolate chips, & coconut are also great additions I've tried. And of course, the nuts are optional, or you can use another kind. The last time I made this I didn't have any zucchini so I grated 3 cups of carrots. You can also use any combination of flours you like instead of what's listed in this recipe. I like the oat flour for extra fiber. You can also just add the oats instead of the oat flour.

Not only are they high in fiber and low in fat they are great on-the-go snacks or breakfast bars!

The batter is ready to go!

Done and ready to be cut and eaten!

I cut these into larger pieces this time...why cut them smaller when they're going to eat them up anyway?!

Signs of Christmas

We put this angel on the top of our tree every year. Bruce's grandma made it years ago and it's a beautiful reminder of her.

I just love this color of blue on these vintage balls!

Instead of going up into the mountains to get our tree, this year we purchased a noble (my favorite kind!) from a local tree farm. So pretty!

I love this angel...it was made about 12 years ago back when my now 21 year- old was in Missionettes.

Another precious angel that my son made me when he was a boy and the sweet little puppy our oldest (now 28!) gave her daddy when she was only 6 years old! Oh how I love the memories!

Texas Cow Chips

While in Texas I picked up some recipe cards in The Alamo gift shop. These are some very yummy cookies that I want you to taste!

Texas Cow Chips

2 c. butter

2 c. each white & brown sugar
4 eggs

2 TB. vanilla

4 c. flour

1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. each baking powder & soda
2 c. each oats & bran flakes
1 c. each pecans, raisins, & coconut
1-12 oz. pkg. chocolate chips

1-6oz. pkg. peanut butter chips

Beat butter and sugars together until blended. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder and soda; gradually add to sugar mixture and stir well. Stir in remaining ingredients. Drop cookies with a 1/4 cup measuring cup onto lightly greased cookie sheet, 6 to a sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Store in containers between sheets of wax paper.

They're not Christmassy, but they'd make great gifts for your neighbors or just for your own family--we ate all of ours! Let me know how you like them!

Texas! Part 2

As my husband & I drove around the Hill Country, I was really needing something to focus my attention on; something to look at besides the deer Bruce kept stopping for! LOL We were noticing all of the many gates to the entrances of homes and Bruce suggested I take pictures of them. Wish I had thought of that a lot earlier! I have never seen so many welcoming entrances. This just confirms that Texans really are as warm and hospitable as you hear...

This one gave us a good laugh!

I was pretty excited when we saw this one!

It may seem to some that the gates are closed to keep everyone out, but I believe it's to keep things in...like all the cattle, horses, & wildlife! They feel welcoming to me...dressed for a special occassion, like having friends over for a visit.

Thank you Texas, for making our 25th anniversary so special!

Texas! Part 1

We just got home yesterday from spending a week in and around the San Antonio area of Texas. Neither my husband or I had ever been to Texas and thought it a great place to see and celebrate our 25th anninversary. What an absolutely fabulous time we had! I was happy to come home to my kiddos and my own home, but I was sad to leave and already miss that wonderful southern hospitality! Today I'll just share a little about my two very favorite stores that both happen to be in Bandera, the cowboy capital of the world.

Ranch Dressings...A beautiful home furnishings store. I even love the name!

My husband, Bruce, enjoying the store as much as me! He purchased a beautiful copper bowl for us to take home.

Pretty Place Settings

I'm very much looking forward to Thanksgiving and having family here. We have been hosting for my husband's family for several years now and truly enjoy having over 20+ people here! It's my excuse to buy more dishes (one of my favorite things to buy second-hand)! Instead of using throw-away plates we can have a homey & pretty setting.

Today I was playing around with my dishes and came up with several fun place settings.

Grace & Truth

Have you ever wondered about grace, truth, rules, etc... and how they all work together? I've been reading this fantastic book by Dr. Henry Cloud, "Changes That Heal: How to Understand Your Past to Ensure a Healthier Future" and he discusses the very topic of grace and truth. I'm only in the first chapter but I really wanted to share the depth of this insight. It seems so simple, yet profound. God's truth is like that!

Here are some of the things Dr. Cloud explains:

"Grace is the unmerited favor of God toward people. Grace is unconditional love and acceptance.

Truth is what is real; it describes how things really are. Just as grace is the relational aspect of God's character, truth is the structural aspect of His character.

Truth without grace is judgement. Grace without truth can be named 'License.'"

To sum it up, truth gives us structure and firm boundaries. Without grace it is harsh.Grace gives us mercy and compassion. Without truth it has no guidance or direction. They must go hand-in-hand.

I've really just barely touched the surface of the insight in this book. I hope I've piqued your curiosity and you'll check it out. I can hardly wait to get through the rest of it myself!

The Power of His Word

I have been feeling a bit down for awhile now. I'm not really sure why....maybe it's a lack of vision, a bit of boredom, too many distractions. I've had a hard time focusing my thoughts on that which is pure, true, lovely, just, honorable, and that which is praiseworthy. As I get into my Bible and work on the study I've been doing, I feel encouraged. God's word is the one thing that can pull me out of these tangled thoughts. Renew my mind, dear Lord! Restore my soul. I need you. Your word is a light unto my path. Thank you for your perfect love. I choose to trust You.

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest." -Matthew 11:28

Bushels of Blessings

Today is rainy and I am sad the sun is hiding, but I do love this time of year with its mixture of warm sunny days and cool nights. The colors are beginning to change and I am reminded of the beauty of this season. Today I am overwhelmed with thanksgiving to my God and His divine protection over our family. Psalm 61:3 says: "For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy." Because my heart is bursting with thanksgiving and gratefulness to God I wanted to share some of the beautiful colors "bursting" around my home. If we open our eyes and really LOOK, we will see we have so much to be thankful for!

I love the uniqueness and variety of these gourds...reminds me of how unique each one of us is.

I love seeing these deep red mums when I pull into my driveway.

Purple doesn't seem to fit the fall colors, but they are such a delight to see. I am amazed at their beauty and how they can bloom during the hottest time of the year.

A pretty bookmark I purchased at Treasures From the Heart in Eugene.

I just purchased the seat cushions at an estate sale. I love sitting out here in the mornings while I drink my coffee.

Pretty green! They are thriving in the shade they have and that little bit of rain.

My sister-in-law gave this to me several years ago. It's a reminder to me of how special our family is! I hope this upcoming season will bring you bushels of blessings!

Yummy Shows!

Just a short note to share some photos from some of my favorite shows. Enjoy!

These first three pictures were taken at Monticello Marketplace. I wish I could remember all of the business names at the different spaces. Trust me when I say they are all fantastic! My girls are having a good time!

Wish I had taken more pics from the Coburg Antique Fair. It takes place every year, the first Sunday after Labor Day, in Coburg, Oregon. Always a fantastic show!

These next pictures are from Colby Cottage.

My youngest daughter and I drove to Albany today to check out Blackberry Junction. It will be going on until September 26th and is held in the Historic Fairmount Grange Hall. I try to go to every show and am never disappointed. So many talented and creative people out there!

Darn...wish there was more to see! It's always sad when we're done looking. Until next time....

A Mom's Heart

School has started for my 13 year old and my son is getting ready to head to college. Of my four children, there will only be one left at home! Yes, I am feeling a bit emotional. :o) I spent the day in town running errands for our home and business and was thinking about my son most of the day...how much I'll miss him, what things he'll need to take, and what kind of cookies to bake him. :o) After my errands were done I decided I needed a little pick-me-up, so I headed to one of my favorite places--The Shoppes At Glory Days, located at 21st & Main in Springfield. Here are my sweet finds.

I just love this felt purse! I paid $29 and feel like I got a great deal. Most of the felt purses I've seen are twice the price.

Aren't these the cutest little shoes? They were labeled "Basket Shoes" and are child-size. And for only $5.95 I just couldn't pass them up!

If you're in the Eugene area come to the famous Coburg Antique Fair being held Sunday, September 13 from 8:00 - 4:00. There will be over 300 dealers there!

Another fun place I love is Blackberry Junction. They will be doing their show on September 18-26 from 10:00-6:00 each day. It is held at The Historic Fairmount Grange Hall, 835 N. Albany Road, Albany, Oregon. There will be fine hand-crafts, antiques & collectibles, along with coffee, pastries, and lunch! A wonderful place to go with a friend!

And one more....Colby Cottage will be opening a new shop on River Road in Eugene September 15 at 10:00! If you've ever seen her things you know why I can hardly wait to see her new place!

I'm so glad I have some fun things to look forward to! Getting out and doing "girl" things is just the anecdote for my emotional mommy's heart.

Sweet Surprises!

I got my camera out today so I could take a few pictures of the collage I did back in a previous post because I decided to repaint the frame and add a little more ribbon. I had a very cute and pleasant surprise that I thought was so much more interesting than my collage! :o)

I hope you enjoy these fun photos I found on my camera that my thirteen year old daughter took in her room. She was either bored or being very creative! Maybe both!

Cottage-Style Favorites

I love looking at magazines and pictures of home decor and thought I'd share with you some simple photos. These are some of my favorite things that I've gathered over the years.

This is my first attempt at making a log cabin quilt. I am still a beginner-beginner!

I love this wall hanging quilt. The hand-stitching is beautiful and definitely done by someone experienced...not a beginner-beginner! We purchased it at an Amish farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

These pretty pillows were made for me by my dear friend who taught me how to quilt.

I almost got rid of these two lamps when we moved into the house we live in now. I kept thinking that I was going to change from my cottagey-look to something a little more "sophisticated.'' Well, that didn't work! I love cottagey things! I'm not really the "sophisticated' type anyhow! lol :o)

The place we live in now had an antique store on the property at one time. I'm sure this is a remnant from those days. I love it!

I purchased this pretty little oil painting at a craft fair quite a few years ago. I love the colors and how it makes me feel--cheery! Shall we have tea?

This window box was made by my aunt. She likes cottagey things too! The window came from her house, which is the same house I lived in for awhile as a child, so it also has sentimental value. It holds some of my little angels and treasures that have been given to me by friends.

Another one of my favorite things that I just can't seem to part with...

I made this jewelry holder, soap dish, or whatever you want it to be, with some vintage dishes I purchased at St. Vincent dePaul's.

I love old plates...most of these were purchased at second-hand stores or garage sales. A few were gifts.

I still feel a bit sad when I see the white vase in this little spot. It was given to me by my quilting friend. I had it sitting on my woodstove and accidentally knocked it over while vacuuming. It broke into too many pieces to repair. I just couldn't throw it away!

I love this bird house that my aunt made.

This sweet bench is another creation from my aunt.

My Weight Loss Journey

Next month will be my two year anniversary for starting Weight Watchers. It was not the first time I had started a weight loss program, but I believe it will be the last! Not to say that it will ever be "over" but to say that I hope to never have to "start over" again. The hardest thing about this journey was the actual deciding to begin it in the first place. I did not want another failure and was very hesitant (aka: afraid!) to try again.

Friends ask me often how I lost weight and I gladly tell them Weight Watchers! What they don't hear (unless they ask for more!) is all the details and work it took to accomplish my goal. I thought this the perfect place to share some of those important steps that have helped me in this journey.

I have been extremely blessed to have two very precious women in my life who have been a huge encouragement to me. Without them I'm sure I would still be trying to find the courage to attempt this change in my life. Through their love and encouragement I have felt the hands of God in my life. Our quilting times and Bible studies together have brought a genuine richness into my life that I will forever treasure. Thank you my dear friends! :o)

Encouragement is so powerful! I began to believe in myself and in who God says that I am. After starting with Weight Watchers, I knew I had to change my thinking and renew my mind or I would not be able to maintain the changes. I began with my goals. Not just the weight I wanted to be, but the clothes I wanted to wear, the relationships in my life, character qualities I admire and wanted, etc... Because I love scrapbooking, making a collage seemed the perfect way to get started. I began typing words and scriptures that were important to me and pasted them onto some cardstock.

I have spent 28 years of my life struggling with my weight, so I didn't have any recent pictures of myself where I liked the way I looked, so seeing myself thin was difficult. I decided to cut out clothes that I liked and tried to picture myself wearing them.

Almost daily, along with my Bible reading, I would meditate on these pages I made. I pictured myself in the clothes, I thanked God for who He made me to be, I prayed for the character qualities I desired. I also continued to do the daily work of planning healthy meals, attending weekly Weight Watchers meetings, and making exercise a priority. I had decided that I was worth the work it took and that my family was worth it too! You see, changing myself has also benefited them in so many ways!

I actually did reach my weight loss goal about 11 months later (as of July this year, I have kept it off a year!). I didn't want to lose motivation so I went over my goals again and decided to make them into a little booklet. Below is just a sample of what I did. At first I had a "before" picture that I was looking at...Ugh! I quickly got tired of that old thing and decided to put the "after" picture into my booklet. I added my first and middle names with their meanings, my right weight, and some of the character qualities that I desire. My family relationships are very important to me so I also added that. It became a book filled with my dreams, hopes, & desires.

The Bible has been the #1 book for renewing my mind! This is where I am reminded of Who God is, what He's done for me, who I am, and what life is all about. When I come to verses that really get my attention, I write them in this index card booklet that you see below. I also love quotes and encouraging words that strengthen me so I read a lot of those types of books. "A Shot in the Arm" by Sharon Lee Riguzzi is a great little book put out by Weight Watchers. It includes daily motivations for those on a weight loss journey.

Two more books that made a huge impact in my thinking: "Day By Day With James Allen" by Vic Johnson & "The Healing Power of the the Christian Mind" by Dr. William Backus.

More great little books with quotes, scriptures, and a good dose of encouragement!

"Daily Reflections for Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey, "Scriptures & Meditations for Your Best Life Now" by Joel Osteen, and one of my all time favorites, "His Thoughts Toward Me" by Marie Chapian.

These are two of my favorite recipe books. They have great real-life recipes for those of us who are not "chefs!" The internet is also a great place to get recipes .

Some people just call this positive thinking, but it is much more than that to me. I am changing my mind! I am replacing those lies I've believed with the truth that comes from God. What we think about affects who we are and how we act. Here are some of my favorite quotes and verses on this topic:

There are many, many more, but I had to stop somewhere! Be encouraged! You are worth it and you CAN do it! Taking care of myself has strengthened me in ways I used to only dream about. I am healthier, have more energy, and I like myself better which helps me to be a more loving person. I still have to remind myself often of WHY I am doing this! I just had to add some more "found treasures" and things I've made with them.
Here are some pretty embroidered pieces and hand made flowers & snowflakes.

Vintage word and letter cards for collage making.

I made these vintage postcards into cards. I may add some stronger backing and some ribbon for hanging them. I plan to give them to two dear friends who have birthdays coming up.

I made this little booklet for myself awhile back. I purchased the ready-made book with some ribbon and other pieces that came as a kit. I added the words and some of my own stickers.

Found Treasures & Favorite Places

I thought it would be fun to share with you some of my "finds" from garage/estate sales, second-hand stores, and some of my favorite little shops.

Below are some cards, etc... with a Paris theme.

I love old hardware and always have my eye open for a good deal. I'm not sure yet how I'll use them, but I love them!

I bought this cute little sign from a great shop in Eugene...Treasures From the Heart is located at 90034 Prairie Road, and is open Thursdays-Saturdays from 12-6. Check out Barb's blog at TreasuresFromTheHeartGifts.blogspot.com.

Another item I love! This is from my current fave place in Eugene--Birdsong Cottage, located on Hwy 99 South, just south of Junction City inside the American Pride Glass building. BJ opens her shop on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-4 and the first Saturday of each month. She also has a space inside Primrose Lane which is located in the historic town of Coburg.

These are so cute! Hand-sewn together...I got these at a garage sale for $1.00!

I've been collecting word cards, buttons, scrabble letters and the like to make more collages.

More hand-sewn goodies from a garage sale...I think these were a dollar.

I've also been saving old postcards, buying them when I see them for a buck or less. I made one into a cute little hanging. A great "cottage" look!

I made these small wall hangings from paper scraps and stickers that I've been saving.
The frames were purchased at a second-hand store for 99 cents each.

I bought this kit at Ben Franklin Crafts for the sale price of 99 cents. I used saved paper scraps, ribbon, buttons, etc...to decorate for a "Love" theme. I really like how it turned out!

Beautiful Oregon

A couple of nights ago we had a thunderstorm, which isn't that uncommon to an Oregon summer. I really like storms, as long as no one/nothing gets hurt. Then it rained again... and again. This morning I woke up and it was still wet outside. It's July for pete's sake! Okay, okay...I'm complaining... It's beautiful and green because of the rain. Rain is good, right? Right!! Then the sun came out and dried up all the rain... yippee! So now I'm reminding myself of the wonderful things about Oregon so I have a thankful attitude instead of being a complainer! :o)

Some years back my husband decided he wanted to show me around our home state since I hadn't seen very much of it. We have taken many trips over the years, and have seen most of Oregon now. The variety of landscape and weather from place to place is amazing to me. The mountains are beautiful and lush with many lakes and waterfalls, the desert is dry and hot with it's own rugged beauty, and the coast is breathtaking. If you've never been to Oregon, it really is a beautiful place to visit! I'm sharing a few of my most recent photos.

As a Child

Okay......I know this doesn't prove anything, but it's a start! I read some great quotes this morning and they made me stop and reflect on myself...

"If we want to discover a childlike joy, we need to practice looking at the opportunities of the moment and saying, 'Let's do it now!'" -Thomas Kincade

What does it mean to be childlike, anyway? One of the qualities I think of when I remember my children as little ones is how easily they forgave. I am reminded of how they liked to have fun, could express themselves creatively without fear, say what they meant, and loved so generously. Many times their eyes of wonder helped me see God's creation with new eyes. Actually, come to think of it, they're still like this! I could take some lessons....

Then I was led to my favorite book, the Bible... Matthew 18:4 says, "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." The study notes below described the humility of a child as having a childlike trust/faith, being vulnerable (ugh! do I have to?), and their inability to advance their own cause without the help, direction, and resources of the parents. (Wow! I don't have to do it alone! I can't do it alone! I need my heavenly Father and I need people!) The Amplified Bible used the words trusting, lowly, loving, forgiving. I also read Luke 18:16-17, Mark 10:13-15, and the story of the rich young man in Mark 10:17-22, which shows the opposite of the childlike trust that I desire more of.

I love that! I want to be more playful, more joyful! There are times for being serious, but in general, I'd like to lighten the load. I can choose to forgive easily, and trust my heavenly Father to take care of me when I allow myself to be transparent and vullnerable. I can choose to practice looking at the opportunities that come my way and do it now!

My Collage Project

I love collage art and have been admiring artists in some of the Stampington magazines and online. I decided to get brave and try it in a way I've never done before.

I began with a few tools like some old cardboard I had saved, a frame I purchased awhile back at a thrift store for 99 cents, along with my paper cutter and scissors.

I measured the cardboard & cut it with my paper cutter into pieces that I taped together to fit the inside of the frame. Next, I searched through my scrapbooking paper to find the design and colors I wanted to use for the background of my collage.

I looked through my stickers, old postcards/cards, magazine clippings, etc...for pieces that I thought would work with my background & theme.

I decided on the two sheets of paper from my paper selection and tore them into random- sized pieces. Then I positioned them and glued them down on the cardboard with ModPodge. I let this dry overnight...not because I had to, but because I was tired!

The next step was deciding exactly which paper/clippings I would use. I trimmed them to the sizes I wanted and played around with the arrangement, then glued them down on the background. I added some ribbon to dress it up a bit and coated the entire collage with more satin sheen ModPodge.
I decided to paint the frame using some left-over paint I had from another project. I painted on a thin layer and let it sit for a minute or two and then wiped some off with a paper towel to get the look I wanted. Here is the almost finished project! It needs to dry completely and then I will add a backing to the frame.

Crazy Beautiful!

I love the song "Crazy Beautiful" written by Chasen Callahan, from the band Chasen. (Click the link to listen!) The words speak deeply to my heart and remind me of the pain I felt when I was younger, but most importantly, the healing and renewing of my mind and the knowledge I now have of God's unending love for me.

"You're oh so beautiful; you don't need anyone's approval;
You've got to believe in yourself you know you are;
You're crazy beautiful... We're different but the same in the eyes of the King; we're beautifully made; in His image we're made...."

I think of my daughters (and even my son!) and how I feel about them; their individual uniqueness, special talents, and their beauty inside & out. How much more does our Father in heaven love us! We are His children, fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). He loves us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3).

You are the only one who can be you! Be the best you that you can be. You are precious in the sight of God...you are crazy beautiful!

Unforced Rhythms of Grace

Today I am reminded of how the busy-ness of life can so easily drain us of our zest for life! Especially this time of year when school is coming to a year's end with graduations and moving college students back home, etc... Even every day life can get to us when we don't take the time to rest, unwind, unplug. As I took my daily walk this morning around our property Matthew 11:28-30 came to my mind....

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me--watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

I absolutely love how this version (The Message) reads! It is so beautiful and I felt at peace as soon as I read it. I needed this gentle reminder of Who my life is really being lived for! Even in my normal daily activities and work, today has been a day of reflection and rest. I am so thankful to my Father who loves me and knows just what I need! I hope you will take time with me, to slow down, unplug, and make time to listen to His still small voice!

Spring Showers Bring May Flowers

I seem to have too many projects going on inside the house right now....rooms that still need painting touch-ups, cabinets needing to be repainted and curtains that need to be sewn. Oh my! I think I bit off more than I can chew and wish I would have stuck to one room at a time! I thought I'd get more done during winter time since I couldn't very well work outside in the cold and rain.....needless to say, I spent my spare time second-hand shopping instead of working. Ugh! Now I want to be outside working in my much neglected yard. The weather has been absolutely beautiful and I don't want to miss the sunshine while it's here! So, I guess those projects will have to wait just a little bit longer! Amidst all the overgrown bushes are still some gorgeous scenes from my yard. I hope you enjoy the colors!

My First Ever Post!

I've been having so much fun looking at blogs that I've been inspired to start my own. What a fun way to communicate with friends and family along with the possibility of making new friends! This is a great creative outlet for me as a stay-at-home mom. I'm looking forward to sharing bits and pieces of my life with you in hopes of inspiring and encouraging you as I have been.
